Reading and Phonics Schemes

Reading areas in school

Reading is such an important part of every day in school. We make sure our reading areas are inviting, comfortable and stocked with the latest and greatest books. We constantly refresh our books in school and encourage all children to develop a love of reading. Find out more about our Reading Champions below!

Reading Champions.

These children love reading and want to share how great reading is with others in and outside of school. We meet to share our love of reading and suggest books for each other. The Reading Champions help out with collective worship with book recommendations and at break times share stories with others. Christ Church library is always open in our main entrance,  come and borrow a book to share at home and return it when you’re finished!

Reading schemes used in school:

Little Wandle Letters & Sounds Revised – these books are primarily used in EYFS and KS1 to allow children to read books closely matched to their phonics phase of development
Oxford Reading Tree & Project X – these books continue to match the progression of children’s reading ages as assessed by the Salford Reading test.

As always, we encourage the use of other books at home and from the library to develop children’s reading for pleasure. This is why we have invested heavily in a more diverse and current collection of books within each classroom through the 100 book reading challenge.

EYFS & KS1 Phonics schemes in use:

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. More information about this programme can be found in the English section of the Humanities curriculum page.

Parents and carers reading workshops.

We regularly hold reading workshops to introduce parents and carers to our new Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised phonics scheme. We also share some tips on supporting your child with their phonics at home as well as how you can inspire children with their reading.
