We are Year 5 and this is our very own webpage dedicated to all things Year 5. We will post lots of thing here that we get up to. It’s a great way for you to see how exciting and interesting our days are. We hope you like it.

Useful Information

PE days are Monday and Friday.
Children must come to school wearing their PE kit on these days every week.
Please note: children should be warm and comfortable as they will be in their kit all day but they also need to be appropriately dressed for PE lessons that could take place indoors or out.

Spelling tests are every Friday, unless stated otherwise.
You can find the spelling test words and their definitions for each test in the spelling area here in our Year 5 area of the website.
Please note: If children get less than half marks, the test will be taken again the following week.

Non-negotiables at Christ Church are that children should take time each day to practice spellings, times tables and to read.
We do not give homework to Year 5 but we do ask that they work on these non-negotiables regularly.

Our curriculum is creative and varied. We plan our year with a range of exciting, challenging activities around our topic for each term. Please see the attached documents below to find out what’s in store this year.

Useful Tips

Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

This is a strategy used to help children learn their spellings.

Your child is given a word to spell and:

  • looks at it
  • says the word
  • covers it over with a piece of paper or their hand
  • writes the spelling again next to the word
  • uncovers the spelling to check if they have got it right.

This is a good method to teach children so that they practise learning the spellings of words, but also so that they are testing themselves.

A knowledge organiser is a one page document, that contains all key facts, information and vocabulary that your children is required to have to obtain a basic knowledge and understanding of a topic being covered. We make knowledge organisers for our main focus topic and science each term.

We know that you know reading is incredibly important so we make reading not just part of our every day life here at Christ Church, but we also make it pleasurable. Here are some of the benefits that exploring books and building a reading habit can bring:

  • Students who read for pleasure make significantly more progress in vocabulary, spelling and maths than children who read very little.
  • Reading for pleasure has many non-literacy benefits and can increase empathy, improve relationships with others, reduce the symptoms of depression and improve wellbeing throughout life.
  • Reading for pleasure has social benefits as well and can make people feel more connected to the wider community. Reading increases a person’s understanding of their own identity, improves empathy and gives them an insight into the world view of others.
  • Students with more positive attitudes towards reading are more likely to read at or above the expected level for their age.
  • There is a strong association between the amount of reading for pleasure students say they do and their reading achievement.

Stars of the Week

We love to share outstanding achievements. Here on this page you will find Year 5 Stars of the week. One child from every class is awarded this certificate for something amazing that they have accomplished that week in school.

Every week at Christ Church, we hold a collective celebration worship where we come together in our key stages recognise accomplishments and achievements.

Below you will see pictures of the children who have been awarded these special certificates.

There are many reasons a pupil can be awarded star of the week, from working well in class, helping a friend, overcoming an obstacle to having a great growth mindset attitude.

We also link our awards to our school core values to help and remind us all of our school values and ethos: Respect, Forgiveness, Trust, Compassion, Friendship, Thankfulness and Koinonia.
